5 ways to accelerate your career
Getting stuck in your career path is something a lot of people deal with during these uncertain times. However, you are responsible for your personal growth and finding ways to make sure you don’t get stuck in your career and to do that, you need to be irreplaceable. (read my tips on how to be irreplaceable at work here)
At the end of the day, YOU NEED TO BE PERFORMANCE ORIENTED. Your career is what you make of it and you don’t get places just by showing up and clocking in and out and doing the time. My five tips on accelerating your career and reaching your highest potential are:
Figure out what your company/organization leans towards: It is important to know what the values of your company are. Aligning yourself with those values helps you to get your career moving. Focus on what’s important to your company. For example, if your company is inclined towards sales, figure out their goal/targets in sales. Make it your goal and do everything you can to achieve it and contribute.
Set the intention to be visible: Ask to join meetings and be present on social media. Be confident and be visible in front of your CEO and managers- show up and be present. Make it a goal to be visible in your workspace and let your work also speak for you im results.
Learn, learn and learn some more: There’s never an end to learning new things. New opportunities require new skills and the best way to acquire these skills is by learning. Take some time out every day to learn something new; something that motivates you. Send articles to your team and clients, share ideas and read to apply what you learn. Take out time everyday to learn something you’re interested in- be it through listening to a podcast or watching a masterclass.
Ask clarifying questions: When you’re given instructions, ask at least 2-3 questions to get a better idea of what is expected of you as the briefs are not always fully communicated. People always assume you know what you’re meant to do and they also expect you to do what they do not share with you. Be curious and ask clarifying questions. Ask what can I do to help; what can I do to improve things. Talk to your team members, managers and clients. Have a clear picture of what you’re required to do. Once you know exactly where to start, you’re already making things happen.
Be Proactive: Don’t wait for permission- start suggesting ideas, solutions and initiatives to your team or clients. Be creative with it. Once you take on responsibilities by yourself, you’re proving that you are capable of much more than just your job description. If you’re doing just what you’re told to do, that’s not enough; you also need to suggest different ways to solve a problem. Everytime you see a problem, suggest a solution and action it- become a problem solver
Your team and manager needs to say ‘You are indispensable’. Your clients need to say they can’t live without you. Your team needs to say they are learning so much from you. And you need to show up in your business and for the company you work with asking how can I be better today than yesterday. Use the following top three messages as a guiding light or path as you progress in your career.
